Adnan Hassanpour, journalist and advocate of cultural rights for Iranian Kurds, was reportedly detained on 25 January in Marivan, a small city in the northwestern province of Kurdistan. He is believed to be held incommunicado in the provincial capital Sanandaj, where he is at risk of torture or ill-treatment.

Up to six people, reportedly from the Ministry of Intelligence, are said to have telephoned Adnan Hassanpour’s mobile telephone on 25 January and told him to go to a certain place. When he followed their instructions, he was arrested. Security forces personnel reportedly took him back to his home where they removed his computer, notebooks and other personal effects prior to detaining him. It is believed that he was transferred the same day to a detention centre in the provincial capital, Sanandaj, around two hours away, where he is believed to be held incommunicado.

Adnan Hassanpour has reportedly been denied access to his family and his lawyer. His mother is said to have made several requests to Ministry of Intelligence officials to visit him, after travelling for more than two hours in cold winter weather to reach Sanandaj, which have all been denied. The officials have reportedly indicated that he will be detained for several more weeks, although he is not known to have been charged with any offence.

Adnan Hassanpour is a former member of the editorial board of the Kurdish-Persian weekly journal, Aso (Horizon), which was closed by the Iranian authorities in August 2005. Adnan Hassanpour had previously reportedly been tried in connection with articles published in the journal.

On 13 February 2007, over 20 Kurdish writers, journalists and artists issued a petition against the manner of his arrest.

Kurdish human rights defender and journalist Sherko Jihani, who was arrested on 27 November 2006, is believed to have been tortured, including by being beaten severely, while held incommunicado at an unknown location, believed to be a detention facility belonging to the Ministry of Intelligence in Iranian Kurdistan. (See further information on UA 331/06, MDE 13/009/2007, 26 January 2007: http://web.amnesty.org/library/Index/ENGMDE130092007?open&of=ENG-IRN).

RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send appeals to arrive as quickly as possible, in English, French, Persian and Kurdish (for authorities in Kurdistan) or your own language:
.- asking to be informed in detail about the reasons for Adnan Hassanpour’s arrest, including any charges and evidence brought against him and of any trial which may be held;
- calling on the authorities to ensure that he is not tortured or ill-treated;
- calling for him to be allowed immediate and regular access to his family, a lawyer of his own choosing, and to any medical treatment he may require;
- stating that if Adnan Hassanpour has been detained in connection with his peaceful activities on behalf of Iran’s Kurdish community, or with his peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression or association, Amnesty International would consider him to be a prisoner of conscience, who should be released immediately and unconditionally; otherwise he should be released unless he is to be charged with a recognizably criminal offence and brought to trial promptly and fairly.

Author(s): Cathy McCann - WiPC Asia and Middle East Researcher
Date: 28th February, 2007

The Writers in Prison Committee of International PEN is seriously concerned about the detention of Iranian Kurdish journalist, writer and human rights activist Adnan Hassanpour, who has been held incommunicado since 25 January 2007. International PEN fears that he is being detained solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to free expression and if so calls on the Iranian authorities to release him with immediate effect. International PEN is also alarmed by reports thatPubliceren he may be at risk of ill treatment, and is seeking reassurances of his well being from the Iranian government.

Amnesty International gives the following information (Urgent Action: UA 39/07):

Adnan Hassanpour, journalist and advocate of cultural rights for Iranian Kurds, was reportedly detained on 25 January in Marivan, a small city in the northwestern province of Kurdistan. He is believed to be held incommunicado in the provincial capital Sanandaj, where he is at risk of torture or ill treatment.

According to PEN’s information, Adan Hassanpour’s arrest may have been motivated by a recent interview he gave to the Voice of America. No charges against him have been made known.

· Calling on the Iranian authorities to disclose the charges under which Adnan Hassanpour is being held and calling for his release if he is being held solely for peacefully exercising his right to free expression;

Ejlal Ghavami, a human rights activist and a prominent personality involved in cultural issues in Kurdistan was arrested two days ago on his way to work. His defense attorney Nemat Ahmadi told ISNA student news agency, “My client had been sentenced to three years imprisonment by the first Revolutionary Court on charges of activities against state security by participating in illegal gatherings, propaganda against the state and in support of opposition groups and for insulting official authorities. We later learned that the second branch of the appellate court had upheld this judgment.” Ahmadi also said, “While the arrest warrant and non service of the appellate court’s decision were not unlawful acts, they were not in line with current practices. Defendants are summoned by courts to be informed of the court ruling against them. If they do not show up, the judgment is announced to the defense attorney.”

Last week, another Kurdish human rights activist Mahmud Kaboodvand was arrested by authorities, making Ghavami’s arrest the second in a week. Ghavami had openly said that he believes that civil society is “not only a shield to protect the government, but is even more of a protectio"

Middle East Information - MEIC Issues and analysis of the Middle East: Conflicts, News, History, Religions and Discussions: "PRESS FREEDOM VERSUS CORRUPTION IN KURDISTAN
BY DR.KAMAL SAID QADIR Vienna-Austria

BY DR.KAMAL SAID QADIR

Introduction:

Low levels of freedom of the press are associated with higher levels of corruption. This rule is also the main reason behind the oppression of press freedom worldwide, including the Kurdistan Region.
Corrupt systems hate the free press, because it is simply bad for corruption. The press plays the leading role in detecting the crimes of corruption and making it public, what may lead to accountability.
This correlation between press freedom and corruption is much more obvious in Kurdistan, where official corruption has reached alarming levels threatening the future and national security of Kurdistan Federal Region.
Shoulder on shoulder with the increasing rampant corruption in that region, the oppression of press freedom, journalists, writers and intellectuals has reached also very critical levels, even compared with press freedom in most corrupt societies in the World.
An empirical investigation into into the legal, economic, political and social fields, in connection with the press freedom in Kurdistan, will lead us to the same conclusion, many other independent researchers on this topic have achieved so far. There is namely a strong correlation betwee"

Iraqi Kurdistan: Tough Times for Arab Refugee Kids

Children of Arabs, who’ve fled violence in the rest of the country, struggling to settle in their new home.

By Najeeba Mohammad in Qaladze and Sulaimaniyah (ICR No. 228, 20-July-07)
Karwan Hussein, a 10-year-old Kurdish boy, was playing with his friends in the town of Qaladze when his new neighbour called for help. Hussein didn't respond, he knows better than to help an Arab.

'They're Arab terrorists,' he said. 'My mother told me not to be around people who speak Arabic because they might kidnap me.'

He said his parents had told him that former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein - 'who was an Arab' - destroyed their majority-Kurdish town in Sulaimaniyah province during his violent reign.

The suspicion built up over years of brutal rule from Baghdad endures. Hussein and his family view their new neighbours, who escaped the bloodshed in Mosul and fled to Qaladze three months ago, with suspicion. All the children in the neighbourhood refuse to play with the Arab family’s two boys.

As the violence has exploded in Iraq, the Iraqi Red Crescent says at least 4,500 Arab families have fled to the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah, centre of this province in north eastern Iraq, since June 2006. This"

Genocide is the worst crime exercised against Kurdish people in their struggle to be recognized as such in contemporary times, it is also concluded in War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity to show its anti-human essence.

The political systems set up in the countries occupies partitioned Kurdish land- Kurdistan- applied assimilation and annihilation policies in order to be able to claim homogenized population to be called nation-state such as Turkey. Genocidal policies are part of the all kind of policies regarding to non-Turkish people such as banning Kurdish language.

An aggregator is a software or online service that uses a Web feed to retrieve syndicated Web content such as Weblogs, podcast, vlogs, and mainstream mass media Web sites, or in the case of a search aggregator, a customized set of search results.

Feed readers keep checking Web sites to see if they have been updated. If so, they display the title, and a link to it, with an excerpt (or the whole contents) of the new information. Each feed contains items that are published over time. When checking a feed, the feed reader is actually looking for new items. New items are automatically discovered and downloaded for you to read.
